Michael Yau

Clinical Optometrist

Michael has been wearing glasses since elementary school. Wearing them as part of his daily life, he always wondered why he needed to do annual eye examinations and change his glasses whenever he had a new lens prescription.

Over time, he began to think more about eye health and ultimately decided to pursue a career in this field. He attended the Illinois College of Optometry (ICO) in Chicago and it was truly an “eye-opening” experience. Not only did he learn about various ocular diseases, but he also recognized the need to provide patient care in a primary care setting and to collaborate with various health medical professions.

ICO provided opportunities for Michael to be involved with the neurology-focused pediatric and geriatric clinics. In these clinics, he saw children with untreated poor eyesight, which led to lazy eye and he encountered other common childhood diseases such as crossed eyes and nearsightedness. Michael gained experience in assessing and monitoring elderly patients with glaucoma, high blood pressure and diabetes. He is well versed in handling emergency cases, such as retinal detachment and corneal abrasion. In his last year of training, his placements took him to Detroit, Phoenix, Florida and North Carolina.
